Edward Francis Gibney (M)
b. 14 July 1909, d. 17 April 1976
Pop-up Pedigree

Edward Francis Gibney About 1949, Ed bought a piece of land in Brecknock Township on the Alleghenyille Rd, just two miles west of Plowville. Being the oldest son,and 14 years old at the time, I (Chris) was the only one old enough to participate in the clearing of the land and subsequently the building of the house. It was in many ways the real education in my life and I will try to build this anecdote over a period of time by adding to it and cleaning it up.

My first memories of "the land" was that, as a city boy, I was almost afraid of getting lost when I walked into the woods to work. My dad had a good friend by the name of Hartman who was one of the first male school teachers to graduate from Kutztown. He wasted most of his life drinking but was a kind of genius when it came to erecting anything. He would get very angry with the young upstart (me) from time to time. I guess now that I'm older than he was when we were together, I can understand his impatience with a youngster's lack of diligence when it came to cleaning up or working hard. In the long run though, I suppose that I learned some very lasting things from him and from Dad's loyalty to him. I know that dad was often the person who would get him back to work after he lost his money and job because of one of his binges. I remember the trip to Philadelphia to buy wood when Hartman almost jumped out of the car as we were passing through Gibraltar because Dad wouldn't stop at a bar for him to get a drink.
When we first got the land, the front part of it was completely full of trees and the first order of business was to select the spot for the house. This was a fairly easy chore since there was an old short driveway which went into the woods from the asphalt road and turned into an area which Dad and Hartman decided was an old charcoal furnace. I often wondered if it was just a campsite and if the charcoal was the residue of a lot of campfires. At any rate we cleared most of the front of the land from the Keystone pipeline to the black top road. I learned to use a two man saw, bush hook and axe during this time and went there almost everyday after school except during basketball season
Money was a key ingredient of everything we did because of the growing family and the need to keep up the payments on the house on South 3rd Street. I guess this is as good a place as any to document the fact that the house at 208 South 3rd St. belonged to Dad's grandmother Gibney (Haghan) before we had it. I can distinctly remember Dad sending me to Chiarleison's sandwich shop to get a big piece of sandwich paper on which he drew up the plans for the house. There wasn't a lot of engineering that went into it, but by todays standards most things were oversized so that I don't think strength was ever an issue.
When we started to dig the cellar, we did so with a couple of picks and shovels but only lasted about a week. After not getting anywhere, he decided to get a person in with equipment and it took them forever due to the size and number of boulders and stumps. It was an awfully big hole as the footings were 60' X24' and in the front, the hole was about 8 feet deep. At any rate, the real work began then with the mixing of the concrete for the footers in a small mixer run by a Briggs & Stratton gas engine. This same engine was used later to cut 2X4's from the oak we would get from my grandfather's Columbian Warehouse. I would guess that we used fully 50% more nails to put the studs in than are actually in the wood. The bent ones are all under the concrete of the basement floor. Occupation: Knitter at Berkshire Knitting Mills. Edward was born at Reading, PA, on 14 July 1909. He was the son of Matthew Joseph Gibney and Gertrude Anna E. Arnold. He married Doris Millicent Eckel at St. Paul's RC Church Reading P on 24 February 1935. Edward died on 17 April 1976 at St Joseph's Hospital Reading, PA, at age 66. His body was interred on 21 April 1976 at Laureldale, PA, at Gethsemane.

Mary was born on 30 August 1801. She was the daughter of John Henry Weisel and Eve Shellenberger. She married Henry Eckel on 19 October 1820. I have date as 19 Oct IGI says 17 Oct. Her body was interred in 1884 at Tremont, PA, at St. Peter's UCC. Found her gravestone in the German part of the cemetery (Lot #5) at St.Peters in Tremont PA. . Got a picture of the stones of Mary and John S. Eckel (her son. The two other stones on the plot are older but of very similar size, shape and decoration. I believe that they are Henry (her husband) and Cornelius (her son who was drowned. Henry's name is on the deed for the burial plot, but Cornelius' name is not. Both of them died before Mary and John. In line with these four stones is a single stone--hard to read--looks like a child's stone says something to the effect "in memory of L. Catherine Eckel" but no dates or anything. Mary died on 26 December 1884 at St Joseph's Hospital Reading, PA, at age 83.
